ENGLISH YEAR 6. THE TIME.

Hello Year 6!!

We are studying and remembering how to say the hour in english. See below the photos.  It will help you to understand it better.

Teacher Sara

10:45 - It is a quarter to 11. Why?. Because it is 15 minutes to 11:00.

08:08 - It is eight past eight. Why?. Because eight minutes passed from eight hours.

03:00 - It is three o'clock. Why?. Because o'clock means the time/hour with no minutes.

05:35 - It is twenty-five minutes to six. Why?. Because the needle of the watch now is in the other side (we must use TO), so we are saying the minutes for next hour... Next hour is six, not five.

......…............................

Depending on the watch (hand) or clock (wall) you see 12 hours or 24 hours.
A day has 24 hours so when you use a watch you can see 12, 1, 2, 3, 4... Or you see 12, 13, 14, 15...

12 = 12 in the morning
1   = 13
2   = 14
3   = 15
4   = 16
5   = 17
6   = 18
7   = 19
8   = 20
9   = 21
10 = 22
11 = 23
12 = 24 at midnight

So when you see your watch...

23:45 - It is a quarter to twelve (midnight)
Why?. Because there are fifteen minutes to midnight and midnight is twelve at night.

15:25 - It is twenty-five past three. Why?. Because we have twenty-five minutes after three (hour) in the afternoon.

18:38 - It is twenty-two to seven. Why?. Because when you count the minutes for an hour (an hour has 60 minutes) there are twenty-two minutes for next hour, and the next hour is seven (18 is six, but we are in the other side of the watch - we are in the "to" side).
